New Smalltalk Book Now Available: Squeak by Example

Squeak by example

Filling a gap for a contemporary manual on Squeak, the open source implementation of Smalltalk, expert Squeakers answer the call.

Bern, Switzerland 18 Sept., 2007. The book "Squeak By Example" is now available as a free PDF download and, for a small fee, as a hardcopy from Lulu. Both are available at http://www.squeakbyexample.org

Under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, the book is filled with hands-on exercises and is intended for both students and developers. Authored by computer science professors and Smalltalk experts, the book covers topics such as the Smalltalk syntax, the Squeak graphical working environment, Squeak classes, Sunit, and Morphic.

The book helps beginners get started with A Quick Tour of Squeak and guides them through their first Squeak application. The Smalltalk language is introduced in three chapters on Syntax in a Nutshell, Understanding Message Syntax and The Smalltalk Object Model.

Development with Squeak is covered in The Squeak Programming Environment and SUnit. Several of the key classes are presented in chapters on Basic Classes, Collections, Streams and Morphic.
